What are the Differences between Doctoral Degrees in Nursing?

-- by Dr. Beverly Hoeffer, OHSU

Most colleges and schools of nursing with doctoral programs offer a PhD degree focused on research training and the scholarship of discovery. Some programs offer a DNSc (or DNS) degree that also focuses on research training and scholarship but often with a more clinical focus. A few programs offer a clinical doctorate in nursing focused on knowledge application in clinical practice. The best way for you to determine the nature of the degree offered by a specific college or school of nursing is to review the materials about the program and to determine which program best matches your own career goals.
